Broomhill National Sculpture Prize 2010
Prize fund of £15,000
The Broomhill Art and Sculpture Foundation launched a brand new national sculpture competition at the end of 2009, set to provide an exciting challenge for new and emerging UK-based artists. With a prize fund of £15,000, the Foundation was delighted with the number of entries and quality of work, attracting fifty budding sculptors to take on the unique, creative challenge.
The Judges
The judges, including internationally renowned sculptors Robert Bradford, Sandy Brown, Giles Penny, Peter Randall-Page, Mike Roles and Broomhill owners Rinus and Aniet van de Sande, gathered at Broomhill in February, to deliberate, narrowing the fifty proposed sculptural ideas down to the final ten. The task was a challenge, but after a day of discussion and heated debate, the final ideas were chosen.
The finalists
The ten finalists, who hail from all parts of the UK, include Angela Read, Charlie Hawkins, Claudia Borgna, David Booth, David Pratt, Dawn van Gerven, Doug Burton, Glynn Griffiths, Rob Johnsey and Sally Underwood. Each finalist received £1,000 in the Spring this year to help them turn their proposed idea into an inspiring, celebrated finished piece.

The Exhibition – From Jun 2010
The final ten sculptures are now on display at Broomhill in the Foundation’s most adventurous exhibition to date.
Broomhill owner - Rinus van de Sande: “We want our visitors to get more involved with sculpture here so we thought that including them in the process of choosing a winner would be a great way to enhance the experience for all ages. We’re delighted with our finalists creations and are confident that our visitors will really enjoy this addition to the Broomhill programme. This exhibition exemplifies the diverse forms that sculpture can take, some of the finalists pieces have a serious message, others are simply fun and interactive - literally inviting you inside for a closer look!”

Association with the North Devon Hospice
The North Devon Hospice is a local charity providing specialist care and support to those with a life-threatening illness and to their loved ones, completely free of charge. We have chosen the North Devon Hospice to be a beneficiary of the National Sculpture Prize, as this charity has a significant, positive impact in the local community which we wish to support. The sculpture that wins the public vote will be donated to the North Devon Hospice for one year and then replaced yearly by the subsequent winning sculpture.
