Jackie Brown - Flock

Independently of the group, each of the six coloured pieces can be considered in terms of their exterior and interior sculptures which talk about the relationship between two materials. The exterior sculptures have been forced to maintain their curves and now manipulate the flexible duplicate sheets to mimic their own form. While the exterior bears work scars from the brutal processes which have shaped it, the interior material flexes into position with relative ease and fluency.

I feel that visually the workload of the materials reverse - the tension in the interior sheet gives the illusion that it is working to pull the exterior form closed. In this apparent exchange of properties the steel adopts a new plasticity as it is seemingly slave to the sharp spring of the interior material.

The two tubular sculptures are negatives of their organic partners and technically the waste product of a manufacturing process. Their role within the group is parental - they maintain the pattern for duplicate forms to be cut. In situ they act as a frame for the landscape behind and project the template when shadows are cast.

Jackie Brown - Flock

The original templates for the piece were made by tracing cow and calf skins, destined to be processed for leather. The series of sculptures were made in consideration of the transformation that occurred in a skin I tanned for a leather rug. The piece is presented at Broomhill as a flock; each sculpture is identified by a tag the way every farm animal in the UK has been post the recent foot and mouth outbreak.
